First bike recommendation:
First, cart the Motorcycle Safety Foundation riding course. www.msf-usa.org. They supply the motorcycles for the course. Then get a copy of Ride Like A Pro, www.ridelikeapro.com and practice those technique. These two steps could make the difference between a minor traffic incident and a fatality.
My counsel for a first bike is the Kawasaki Ninja500. It has plenty strength to pull you out of a fruitless situation on the highway but not too much strength to get you into a impossible situation. It is cost effective and a fun ride.
I recommend staying away from the 250 size bikes as they do not own sufficient power to pull you out of a discouraging situation on the highway. Unfortunately, the average driver has the fan/blower running at full speed, radio blaring, cell phone to one ear, and cannot possibly be fascinated to the road conditions around them. This makes it historic to be able to verbs ahead quickly to avoid one hit by another vehicle changing lane and/or entering the highway.
Last recommendation... the tallying of a compact air horn (e.g. Wolo's "Bad Boy" or Steibel's Nautilus) They are impressively effective at raise the attention level of the average semi-conscious driver.
Good luck and ride not dangerous!

Answers: The Versys is a new model and reading almost it, this bike looks like a hugely easy bike to ride and toy with, the long front rake and the size of the front tire looks like it would be confident to steer, it has a sport bike backside suspension with radial tires.
