A straight pipe would be bad for the bike and you would lose power (no wager on pressure) otherwise racers would not have exhaust pipes. I would go near Akrapovic or two bros. Best sound and performance but costly.

Shaun S is half right. No pipes would foul your plugs and the like. The right straight pipes will create fund pressure. But whatever you change, product sure you rejet your carb. If you have a sport bike or small cruiser, I would go next to the muffler (sounds better), if you have a big cruiser, you can straight pipe it if your local laws allow it.
Without shifting the needles in the carbs (or if you've fuel injection getting a Power Commander, or similar), neither will give you a substantial gain (except contained by noise).

Why not hold a little consideration for other people. Get a opening and buy a better bike if you want higher performance. A lousy couple horsepower at the expense of your neighbor's ears is naive and rude.

Answers:    Straight pipes blow. I know, I wasted a pot of dough on straights for my old XL1200C. Dyno time didn't aid, it was just a physical pain in the butt to tune. Learned my lesson and get a set of SE II pipes on my 'lil piggy now. Had an S & E carb put on also. Matching the carb and exhaust helps a nouns when it comes to getting more HP and torque. And some dyno time will get you the best bang for your buck. And a honourable exhaust will make more noise, but sounds better than the elevated pitched bark you get from straights. The SE II's are mellow lower than 2,000 RPM, but when I have to twist the wick they nouns off in a course the straights never did. These pipes "pop". Don't like the noise, return with a car. (That guy was a authentic piece of work. I've never had a complaint about uproar, and I fire my 'ol gal up to go to work at 6:30 in the morning!) And one other little tid-bit. There is a object they say loud pipes save lives. It's true. I live contained by Florida where 80 year old drivers are adjectives. They may not be able to see me (And with adjectives the bling I have hung on my HOG, I can't see how they can miss me!) but, by God, they can certainly hear me! Take perfectionism, ride safe. Ciao!
