I decided that my first motorcycle is going to be a Suzuki, but I am torn between the SV650 standard bike and the V-Strom 650 dual-sport bike. I seriously like them both and I am asking this to gain rather insight to aid me in my decision. I prefer to those who answer this query that you be honest, unbiased, as well as current or previous owners of the 2 afore-mentioned motorcycles.
go beside the SV1000, or V Strom 1000 instead!
the SV650 is a major seller, everybody owns one!
ask yourself?
do you want indistinguishable bike everybody else owns?
what I don't like about the SV, or V Strom 650 is after that engine ( same engine ) breaks contained by it sounds like a piece of junk, to me the engine hum is louder than the exhaust noise!
before you buy one, look at a used one near at least 3K miles and listen to it run.
They are both good bikes, but other bikers will formulate some type of insulting comment by the way the engine sounds.
go beside the Yamaha FZ6
SV650 because of the Torque and horsepower!!

Answers: I have owned the sv650 and have ridden the sv1000, V-strom 650 and 1000 several times. My honest opinion is the 650s are the better bikes for beginners as very well as experienced riders, so your choices are very good to start beside.
If you want a bike that is sporty and will be doing track-days I would recommend the sv650. If you want an all around great bike the V-strom is your best choice. There is no bike that really compares to it. You would enjoy to buy 2-3 different bikes to equal the V-strom 650.
