when i come off the throttle and hit the gun down switch, then flick it stern on, the bike backfires, is this doing it any wounded? its notch and cant comfort myself from doing it. especially when passing grannies.

It could indeed be doing damage. That's alot of unburned fuel cooking bad. I know it can't be good for the exhaust system and it seem to me that it's putting high pressure on the exhaust valve.
I had a Datsun B-210 and did indistinguishable thing near it. It was a blast. (Pun intended) The muffler completed up round. Did'nt seem to do any powered damage but I might own just be lucky.
