2003 Ford Focus?

About got kill today when my 2003 Ford Focus came rotten the interstate out of cruise control (used break to disengage cruise) reached the top of the bad ramp - tried to stop and it was as if motor was still at 65 mph - as if cruise never turned bad wouldn't gear down or what ever you call it. I have to really hold the brake hard until traffic cleared and I could move forward. It started smelling resembling burning tires or something burning because I was trying to hold on to it stopped. Any idea if it's a cruise control throttle sticking issue or speed sensor and should I hold just put it into Neutral fast? This doesn't happen repeatedly. Just enough to startle the crap out of you and be dangerous.

A quick tip on cruise control, other disengage it early and be prepared to use the cruise on/off switch if the system doesn't disengage when the brake is pressed.

If I be you, I would have the vehicle checked over by a licensed mechanic to be on the not detrimental side. I would not use the cruise again until it has be checked by a mechanic. The smell came from your tires when you slammed on the brakes and slid the tires.

I bet that be a frightening ordeal.
