How can I judge the distance of the saloon behind me (on the vanished or right lane beside me) before I know its far away plenty and safe for me to get moving and cut into that lane? How should the image of that vehicle shows up on my rear and side mirror be?

Answers: I be taught (many years ago) that when you can see BOTH of the car's headlights within your rearview mirror, then it's protected to pull posterior in to the highway lane within front of him. That standard has worked for me for over a Million miles of undamaging driving.
