We recently have an ATV and Side by Side stolen from our cattle ranch. We really used those vehicle to get around the fish farm and maintenance the fruit farm. Answers: We use to run GPS tracking via Nextel cell phones in our fleet of trucks. Yes, they did stipulation to be turned on and if they were low on charge they have a tendency to loose track. Another entry to think in the order of with this method is that it be an extra service to have activate to do the tracking by phone. Also, if they did not have a clear estimation of the sky they would loose track so it wouldn't be a good view to try and conceal one on a vehicle and get any reliable results. The best piece to do although not the cheapest would be to get a complex mounted GPS unit i.e. designed for this type of situation.
