Answers: An anti-lock braking system is a system on motor vehicles which prevents the wheel from locking while braking. The purpose of this is to allow the driver to maintain steering control beneath heavy braking and, contained by some situations, to shorten braking distances (by allowing the driver to hit the brake fully without skidding or loss of control). Disadvantages of the system include increased braking distances lower than certain conditions and the creation of a "false sense of security" among drivers who do not think through the operation and limitations of ABS.

It causes the wheel in the vehicle to rapidly brake and release to avoid the wheel locking up, which would just effect the car to slide and not know how to steer. It's a nice thing for inexperienced drivers to hold in poor weather, but a short time ago an annoyance for me.
