I just bought the latest CR-V (Honda) and got an AT sports car for the first time. I always use "D" when I drive but my bf said using 2 and 1 would be better. When would I use them? What difference does it bring in? Can I save gas using them?

The booklet will probably also mention that the only time to gear down would be surrounded by climbing a steep hill, and, below a load, where on earth the transmission keep gearing up and down, "hunting" for the right gear to make the climb. When you perceive your car doing that, next gear down one step. If it continues, then down another. Be sure to gear vertebrae up as the road levels.
Another situation may be surrounded by a steep downhill grade. If you grain the car trying to stir too fast on a downhill, and you are using continuous brakeing to keep up a safe speed, next, slow down with the brake, gear down, and consent to the enging provide some of the brakeing power. Again, be sure to gear back up when you conquer a more level stretch.
D is Drive. 1 and 2 are first and second gears, respectively, and are for special situations, like starting out when towing, or stuck contained by the mud, etc. For normal situations, use "D".
And no, you will use more gas, as 1 and 2 don't shift into highter gears.
